Escaping Conformity
This piece began with a found photo of a woman sitting on a bench backed by a short fence. it intuitively evolved to a nondescript bench outside a securely fenced-in, rigid and pseudo-perfect park. The bars reach into the clouds where the pearls dangle as false promises calling her back to safety while straps and chains hang loosely, no longer holding her back as she bravely watches for her freedom bus to arrive. It is never too late to break the chains and escape the fences that hold us in the patriarchal box of conformity, with its picture perfect illusions of pretty safeness while silencing individual voices of longings and creative spirit.
This piece is 41"h X 35"w including the assemblage components beyond the canvas.
